Weltweite Statistik zu Behinderungen
Quelle: WHO (02.12.2022, Disability and Health)
Based on several studies, the WHO (World Health Organization) estimates that approximately 1.3 billion people, or 16% of the world's population, have a significant disability.
Diese Zahl steigt. Das liegt vor allem daran, dass weltweit die Lebenserwartung steigt und viele Behinderungen im Laufe des Lebens aufgrund von Krankheiten und Unfällen entstehen.

Factors that lead to inequalities in healthcare
Structural factors: People with disabilities face ableism, stigmatization, and discrimination in all areas of life, impacting their physical and mental health. Laws and policies can deny them the right to make their own choices and permit a range of harmful healthcare practices, such as forced sterilization, involuntary commitment and treatment, and even institutionalization.
Social determinants of health: Poverty, exclusion from education and employment, and poor living conditions increase the risk of poor health and unmet medical needs among people with disabilities. Gaps in formal social support mechanisms mean that people with disabilities rely on family members to participate in health and community activities, which disadvantages not only them but also their caregivers (mostly women and girls).
Risk factors: People with disabilities are more likely to have risk factors for non-communicable diseases, such as smoking, poor diet, alcohol consumption, and lack of exercise. A major reason for this is that they are often excluded from public health services.
The health system: People with disabilities encounter obstacles in all areas of the healthcare system. For example, a lack of knowledge, negative attitudes and discriminatory practices among healthcare staff, inaccessible healthcare facilities and information, as well as a lack of information or data collection and analysis on disability all contribute to the health inequalities this group faces.
Survey of screen reader users
The WebAIM Screen Reader User Survey is an annual survey conducted by WebAIM, an organization for accessible web development. It is aimed at users of screen readers, which assist people with visual impairments in reading digital content. The survey gathers information on screen reader usage, challenges in accessing web content, and users' preferred browsers and platforms. The results are used to improve the accessibility of websites and applications and to better understand the needs of screen reader users.
A look at the USA and perhaps into the future:
Lawsuits due to insufficient accessibility
Quelle: "Federal Website Accessibility Lawsuits Increased in 2020 Despite Mid-Year Pandemic Lull", By Seyfarth Shaw LLP on April 28, Website
Die Zahlen für Klagen zur Barrierefreiheit von Websites, die 2020 bei US Bundesgerichten eingereicht wurden, liegen vor. Sie zeigen einen deutlichen Anstieg gegenüber 2019.
The total number of lawsuits filed in federal courts in 2020, in which plaintiffs complained that websites were inaccessible to them, was 2,523. That is almost 300 more than in 2019.
While this is not comparable to the explosive 177% increase in these claims from 2017 to 2018, it is a significant increase compared to the relatively stable figures for 2018 and 2019. This suggests that factors such as the pandemic have increased the need for accessibility.
