Thinking about accessibility in the long term
Issue 9-24
Mit Domingos de Oliveira (netz-barrierefrei.de):
Many customers are currently contacting us regarding the Accessibility Strengthening Act, which comes into force on June 28, 2025, and obligates parts of the private sector to make their digital offerings accessible. While we welcome the fact that many people are now engaging with this topic, we would like to address two potential issues:
First of all, it's not advisable to act rashly now. No one is going to shut down your website on June 30, 2025, because it's not accessible. Anyone claiming otherwise is not being credible.
On the other hand, we find it regrettable that many customers don't think beyond June 28, 2025. Accessibility isn't implemented once and then left as is. Instead, consider developing a long-term strategy with a competent partner to support you.

Statistics of the month
In July 2024, the Federal Statistical Office published updated figures on severe disability in Germany. At the end of 2023, approximately 7.9 million people were living with a severe disability, representing 9.3% of the total population. This is a slight increase of 67,000 people (0.9%) compared to the previous survey at the end of 2021.
The majority of severe disabilities (around 91%) were caused by illness, while 3% were congenital or developed in the first year of life. Physical disabilities are the most common, particularly impairments of the internal organs and the musculoskeletal system. Approximately 15% of those affected had intellectual or mental disabilities.
Quelle: Destatis
