Heute rächt es sich, dass viele Anbieter digitaler Dienstleistungen das Thema Barrierefreiheit vernachlässigt haben. Ein Beispiel sind die sogenannten Dritt-Anbieter-Dienste. Das sind Services, die benötigt werden, damit zum Beispiel Onlineshops oder Banking funktionieren: Cookie-Services, Verifikations-Dienste, Paket-Verfolgung, Chat-Bots und vieles mehr. Sie sind teils elementar, damit die Online-Angebote laufen und müssen ebenfalls barrierefrei sein. Voraussichtlich wird hier gelten, dass diejenigen die besten Markt-Chancen haben, die sich am schnellsten barrierefrei machen können.

Good news of the month

Apple's new AirPods could influence the hearing aid market. They are designed to provide good support for mild to moderate hearing loss and cost significantly less than traditional hearing aids. Perhaps more importantly, they could be much more readily accepted by users.

The company behind BeMyEyes is very active. First, it acquired AppleVis, a platform for blind Apple users. AppleVis was threatened with closure because the original operators could no longer continue due to health reasons.

Subsequently, a collaboration with Meta was announced. Meta, in partnership with Ray-Ban, offers smart glasses that are currently very popular among blind Americans. In Germany, they are not as relevant at present because many of the services important to blind people are not yet available here.

A G7 summit on disability took place in Perugia, Italy, in October 2024. During this meeting, the "Solfagnano Declaration"adopted, which puts the rights of people with disabilities to inclusion and participation at its core. This meeting is considered an important step towards ensuring the human rights of people with disabilities on a global level."

Statistics of the month

The consulting firm Captera interviewed companies in the digital sector from 11 European countries about digital accessibility. A total of 2,748 people were surveyed. Here are some interesting findings:

  • 74 percent believe they have lost customers due to a lack of accessibility.
  • For 80 percent of companies, accessibility is a high or very high priority.
  • 73 percent internationally and 79 percent in Germany report having already implemented accessibility features.

As in any profession, there are authorities in digital accessibility, the gray eminences, whose mere mention of their names is enough to inspire awe. These people, however, are not only highly experienced; they are often stuck in outdated ways of thinking. A recent example is the widespread rejection of AI or increased automation in accessibility. One can certainly be critical of these topics. However, what we find lacking is a fundamental openness to new approaches.

Since there wasn't much new on this front this month, we would like to highlight three interesting surveys from the last 12 months:

  1. Umfrage zur Inklusion und Barrierefreiheit in Thüringen 2023: Diese Studie zeigt, dass etwas mehr als ein Viertel der 1.000 befragten Personen aus Thüringen im November 2023 ein Beispiel für eine funktionierende Inklusionsmaßnahme oder gute Barrierefreiheit nennen konnte. Von den genannten Beispielen betrafen 25 Prozent die Barrierefreiheit im Alltag, 23 Prozent verwiesen auf die Barrierefreiheit in öffentlichen Einrichtungen. Statista: Können Sie mir ein Beispiel für funktionierende Inklusions-Maßnahmen oder gute Barrierefreiheit in Ihrem Umfeld nennen?
