Barriers to vaccinations and clubhouses

Im Januar 2021 gab es kein dominantes Thema in der Barrierefreiheits-Szene. Viel diskutiert wurde die App ClubHouse, die aktuell für Blinde und Schwerhörige/Gehörlose schwer bis gar nicht zugänglich ist. In Deutschland wurde außerdem kritisiert, dass die Anmeldung zu den Corona-Impfungen nicht barrierefrei ist, trotz entsprechender Gesetze.
Otherwise, a working draft of the new accessibility guidelines, WCAG 3.0, is currently available. These documents undergo a complex process of revision and commentary; only the release candidate comes truly close to the final version.

Good news for blind users of Facebook and Instagram: Facebook plans to significantly improve automatic image descriptions. We haven't noticed any difference yet, but we'll keep an eye out.

The LaTeX typesetting language would be an effective tool for creating accessible PDFs. Unfortunately, there is currently no corresponding technical translation from LaTeX to PDF. The PDF Association, the Vatican of the PDF format, so to speak, has now developed aWorking group on LaTeX and accessible PDF established.

This is followed in quick succession by the Zero Conference, the DeafIT Conference in March, and the Online Inclusion Congress – all online, of course. Tool of the Month
In diesem Monat wollen wir auf das kostenlose Tool Accessibility Insights von Microsoft aufmerksam machen. Das Programm gibt es als Browser-Erweiterung für Edge und Chrome sowie als Desktop App für Windows. Damit können Webseiten, Android-Apps sowie Windows-Anwendungen auf Barrierefreiheit geprüft werden. Natürlich ist es kein automatischer Test, sowas wollen wir Ihnen nicht unterschieben. Es ist eine Mischung aus automatischer Prüfung und Schritt-für-Schritt-Tutorial für manuelle Prüfungen. Sie sollten allerdings gut Englisch verstehen und bereits Grundkenntnisse der Barrierefreiheit oder viel Geduld haben. Accessibility Insights
